An apicoectomy is a minor surgical procedure that involves our endodontist accessing the base of the affected tooth’s root and removing a small portion of its tip. These initial steps are followed by the placement of a small filling to create a sealed root end that will keep out germs to prevent further problems and help resolve any residual symptoms. An apicoectomy is an effective procedure for preserving previously treated teeth, eliminating dental infection, and restoring the health of the surrounding tissues. It can be most useful in complex cases where fractures or hidden canals in a tooth can continue to cause pain or harbor bacteria. In some cases, an apicoectomy offers an excellent alternative to redoing the root canal with a second root canal or retreatment procedure, when such a treatment may further weaken and jeopardize the tooth.
